RTE is not only banned from streaming Netflix’s hit shows like Game of Thrones, but it is also not allowed to show any of its shows in the UK and Ireland.
This is a move which is part of a wider crackdown on RTE which has been dubbed “the hate speech of the century”.
In a statement to the Irish Times, the company said: “We have taken the unprecedented step of banning RTE from all RTE channels.
We believe this to be in the public interest.”
The company said the ban is necessary to protect consumers from content that “may be offensive to others, and may incite hatred”.
However, it added that RTE will still be allowed to broadcast “a small selection” of its own content on the streaming service.
A RTE spokesperson said the company would not be commenting further until the company had been given the green light by the Irish regulator.
